Did I leave the iron on?

This is the most important part of the trip, we've got to work out all the boring details. I live in New Jersey, but we'll begin the trip in California. I was in the U.S. Air Force at Travis AFB for 10 years and I want to visit some old and dear friends. We're going west to east for two reasons: 1) at the end of the trip when I'm exhausted and sick of traveling I'll only be 40 minutes or so from my house, and 2) that's the way everyone tells me I should go. something about the prevailing winds going from west to east. I'll believe that when I see it. I don't get tailwinds unless I ride backwards. So I've got to work out transport for us, bikes and gear to the left coast. Originally I wanted to leave the 1st of june 2001- but my oldest is graduating 8th grade, so I'll have to wait til the end of June. I'm figuring three months travel time, this means we won't be back in time for the kids to start school, so somewhere along the way I've got to transport them and paraphenilia back to Joisy before september first. I'm hoping we'll be close enough that my husband can just drive out and pick them up.

$$$$$

Unfortunately I'm not independently wealthy, so I've got to work something out for income replacement. I came up with a chart, the kids designed it and will track it. Whatever money we save for the trip is added to the chart. This way we can see how much we're saving, it keeps us motivated. We'll still have to keep expenses down. We'll camp most of the way, hosteling or hoteling once a week so we can bathe and watch cable. We'll bring a stove and shop at supermarkets for food. I've listed our packing list. This is what I've come up with from my touring experience. I'm sure it'll change beyond all recognition by the time we leave.

Route

I would really like to travel across the southern U.S.- I'd like to visit Sedona and Prescott AZ again and I want to check out the Indian ruins through out the Southwest. But since I have to travel during the summer we're going to use the northern route. We'll use the Adventure Cycling Assn Northern tier maps interspersed with whatever folks along the way tell me; I deviate with the slightest provocation.
